Migration guide

Switching from
FreshBooks.

Practical walkthrough — no marketing fluff. Most teams complete the move in under an hour. Here's exactly what to do.

The 6 steps

  1. 1

    Export your FreshBooks data

In FreshBooks, go to Reports → Time tracking → Export → CSV for the time period you want to migrate. Separately export Clients and Projects from their respective list screens. You'll get three CSV files.

  2. 2

Check the user_email column in the time CSV

FreshBooks's time export typically includes email per row. Confirm the column header is `user_email` (rename if needed — Tempough's importer matches on that exact name). If the email column is missing for any reason, add one before uploading.

  3. 3

Decide what to do with FreshBooks accounting

FreshBooks is your books today. After switching, your options are: (a) keep FreshBooks for accounting and use Tempough only for time + invoicing, (b) move to QuickBooks Online with Tempough as the time + invoice front-end, or (c) keep accounting in spreadsheets and use Tempough's CSV export. Most teams pick (b) — it's what Tempough is designed for.

  4. 4

Sign up for Tempough and invite your team

Create your Tempough workspace at tempough.com. Invite team members at Settings → Team. Their emails must match the user_email column from step 1. The free tier works fine for the import — you don't need a paid plan until you want to invoice clients.

Step 3b — Invite teammates. Emails must match the user_email column.
  5. 5

Import — clients, then projects, then time

Go to /imports and upload in that order. Each step has a Dry-run button that runs the operation in a transaction and rolls back so you can preview exactly what would land. Re-uploading a fixed file dedupes automatically.

  6. 6

Set up billing rates and cost rates

FreshBooks tracks billing rates at the project level. Recreate them on each Tempough project. If you want margin reports, add per-user cost rates at Settings → Cost Rates — FreshBooks doesn't expose these so you'll set them fresh, which is a one-time exercise.

Tempough Settings → Cost Rates with effective-dated history per person
Cost rates per person — effective-dated, so historic Margin reports stay reproducible.

Per-project billing rates — overrides on top of the workspace default.

Migration FAQ

Yes, but it's more work. Tempough doesn't do bookkeeping — if you stay on FreshBooks for accounting, you'll export invoices and time from Tempough as CSV and import to FreshBooks manually each month. Most teams take the migration as an opportunity to move accounting to QuickBooks Online, which Tempough exports to natively.
